GOMM GOALS LEAD LADIES TO VICTORY
A determined performance from Wisbech Town HC Ladies 1st XI helped ensure a 4-1 win at home to North Norfolk on Saturday. Treating the game as a ‘must win’, as the ladies look to maintain their place in Division 1 North, Wisbech came out strongly and soon found themselves ahead when Georgie Dunn linked up with Jo Gomm, with the latter opening the scoring with a neat finish.
Gomm added a second shortly after, pouncing on the rebound after her initial shot was saved, before completing her hat trick inside the opening 35-minutes. North Norfolk managed to pull a goal back before half time, but Wisbech continued to dominate much of the play, and eventually added a fourth goal when captain Jo Bland linked up with Gomm, who found Jemima Mitchell at the back post to complete the victory.
The result sees the ladies move 3-points clear of the relegation zone, with four games to play, though Bland’s side face a tough test this weekend when they travel to league leaders Bury St. Edmunds.
Wisbech Town Mens 1st XI hoped to bounce back from defeat in their last game when they travelled to local rivals Pelicans HC, with the Fenland side starting well at Lynnsport. Wisbech controlled much of the possession, and won the majority of the 50-50 battles, whilst also defending admirably, with Player of the Game Lewis Jackson front and centre of Wisbech’s defensive efforts during the half.
Despite seeing more of the ball during the opening 35-minutes, Wisbech could not make their superiority count however, going close on several occasions but finding themselves unable to break the deadlock before the break. The hosts came out quickly during the second half, forcing Wisbech deeper and deeper. Despite some resilient defending, Pelicans eventually took the lead via a goalmouth scramble, before doubling their lead shortly after.
Wisbech goalkeeper Aiden Falkus made a string of excellent saves to keep his side within touching distance of Pelicans, but a third goal late in the tie ensured all three points would go to the King’s Lynn based side. The result leaves Wisbech sitting in 7th place in the Division 1 North table, with a home game against 2nd placed Harleston Magpies coming up this weekend (13:45PM).
The Men’s 2nd XI got back to winning ways away at Cambridge City, with forward Josh Porter scoring a hat trick during a 5-0 win. Cambridge defended deep, and looked to catch Wisbech on the counter during the first half, but the hosts back line was eventually breached when Wisbech captain Jonathan Shippey fed Porter at the back post to convert a short corner opportunity just before half time.
Midfielder Jason Mallett doubled Wisbech’s lead shortly after the restart, with a great solo effort, before Porter added his second and third goals of the game. Calvin Bishop rounded out the scoring late in the second half, capping off a well worked Wisbech move. Shippey’s side remain 2nd in the Division 3 North West table, with 5th place Cambridge Nomads scheduled to visit Harecroft Road this weekend (12PM).
Wisbech Ladies 2nd XI put in a strong performance away at Spalding, earning a point following a 2-2 draw. The hosts took the lead midway through the first half, before Wisbech equalised through Kate Penn following some good work from Oliwia Bolka on the break. Wisbech controlled much of the play from there on out, but found themselves a goal down when Spalding converted a short corner opportunity against the run of play.
Despite the setback, Wisbech rallied and continued to push for an equaliser, with Player of the Game Katie Dunn putting in a strong performance at the back to ensure Wisbech would not be caught on the counter. Eventually the hard work paid off, with Emma Baker converting a rebound opportunity late in the game. This weekend, Wisbech hosts Ely City (10:30AM).
The Mens 3rd team hoped to build on the previous week's victory when high flying Peterborough visited Harecroft Road, with Josh Bower’s early goal giving Wisbech hope against the city side. Peterborough were quick to respond however, converting two short corner opportunities, before adding a third goal prior to the half time break. Peterborough pulled away during the second half, scoring a further three goals to secure a 6-1 win. Wisbech will look to regroup this weekend when they travel to Ely City.
Two goals a piece from captain Brandon Ruff and midfielder Mat Boyall underpinned a 7-0 win for the Mens 4th team against Kettering. Bradley Burton, Robin Middleton, and Howard Atkins were also on target for Wisbech, who remain unbeaten in 2022, but face a tough trip to league leaders Spalding this weekend.
