ABOUT WISBECH TOWN HOCKEY CLUB
Wisbech Town HC can trace its roots back to the 1930s, with mens and ladies sides representing the club at tournaments in the UK, and on overseas tours, for almost 100-years. The club played home games at various locations in and around Wisbech, before amalgamating with Wisbech Town Cricket Club in 1962. This led to the formation of Wisbech Town Cricket & Hockey Club, and made Harecroft Road the permanent home for the joint club.
In 1974, newly elected Chairman Graham Ward setup the Wisbech Town HC Junior section, with the help of fellow club members Max Huckle, Edward and Richard Sandall, Sam Shippey Junior, and Bernard Fletcher. The aim was to encourage young players to join the club, under the guidance and coaching of Senior club members. In 1982, and 1983 the clubs under 18 side reached the Finals of the National Indoor Championship.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Wisbech Town HC has expanded to five Men’s teams, and five Women’s teams, as well as continuing to field two Mixed sides in national competitions. On top of this, the club continues to run a successful Junior hockey section, catering for young players aged 5 and up.
INTERESTED IN JOINING WTHC? WE WELCOME PLAYERS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
SENIOR HOCKEY
Wisbech Town HC Mens teams train on a Monday evening, while the Ladies teams train on a Thursday evening.
Thursday evenings also include Back to Hockey and New to Hockey sessions, aimed at those players who are returning to the sport after an extended period away from the game, or those who are totally new to this exciting team sport. These sessions are tailored to help focus on the hockey basics, and help build confidence.
You can learn more about Senior training, and how to join WTHC, here.
JUNIOR HOCKEY
Wisbech Town HC runs two Junior training sessions each week, with sessions on a Saturday morning (9AM-10AM) and Wednesday evening (5PM-6PM) aimed at children aged between 5 and 14-years-old.
Our 2024/25 Junior training sessions start on Wednesday 11th September, and Saturday 14th September 2024, and run until Spring 2025.
You can find out more about our Junior section here.
NEW MEMBERS
WTHC welcomes new members of any ability - whether you have played before, or are totally new to the game. For beginners, there are club sticks available to borrow initially (until players purchase their own); but WTHC strongly recommends all players wear a gum shield and shin pads (as well as bringing a drink) for all training sessions.
For 2024/25, WTHC is extending its introductory scheme, with the first three sessions FREE for new players; after this, players will be invited to become a WTHC Member.
Please Note: when signing up a new Under 18 player, we require a parent or guardian to sign up on the Teamo app as well - to ensure Safeguarding measures are maintained.
Wisbech Town HC uses Teamo to help administer Membership - this includes collecting Membership and Match fees, and sharing details of matches and training sessions, plus other social events at the club, with members.
Teamo also allows the club to communicate with parents and guardians of Junior players, ensuring Welfare Standards are upheld, whilst also ensuring young players are given the opportunity to play hockey, and feel like part of the club community.
You can learn more about Teamo, and membership at WTHC, here.
