Ambitious plans for both a new pavilion and an astroturf pitch by a local sports club has received a huge £500k boost.

Wisbech Town Cricket and Hockey Club have been busily fundraising for the past 10 years in the hopes of realising their dream of providing a new pavilion and better facilities for the club and the community.

Since the original plans were announced the club has added the wish of providing an astroturf pitch, with the hope the two projects will help secure the club's future.

They have already received amazing support including an anonymous donation of £350,000 given last year.

Since then the funds have continued to grow thanks to some generous donations, as well as proceeds from a monthly lottery - but there was still some distance to go before work could begin on both projects.

Now the club has been blown away by an even bigger donation this time they have received £500,000 in memory of the late Mary Judd.

Announcing the latest gift on behalf of Wisbech Town Cricket and Hockey Club, Jane Peggs, said "This is an incredible amount of money that will undoubtedly allow our hopes and dreams to become a reality.

"This extremely kind donation will take our available fund to £1,040,000 and means we can now press forward with the projects for a new pavilion and astroturf pitch. The logistics are vast and complex. It is vital that we ensure the club can continue to operate and provide facilities for its members during the construction of both, so we will need to adopt careful strategies to achieve this. If all goes well, it is very much hoped that we can complete both projects within the next two years.

"It is crucial that we fully grasp this opportunity that now presents itself. There will still need to be a concerted effort by members to continue fundraising. Our aim is to ensure we raise sufficient funds to commit to our preferred build specifications, whilst also leaving room for the inevitable additional costs that tend to present themselves during the progression of such projects. More details of our fundraising targets will therefore follow.

"This is clearly fantastic news, not only for the club, but the community at large. We have for some time endeavoured towards a vision of delivering high-quality facilities, suitable to propel the Club towards its long-term goals both on and off the pitch. The joint committee have worked extremely hard to get to this point, with important contributions from all our members along the way. I am delighted that we can now focus on delivering our vision.

"Please join me in thanking all our donors. We have been very fortunate over these 10 years to have been the recipient of so many generous donations, and we will be forever grateful."
