“Wisbech Hockey Club look to seal historic season at mixed plate finals”

Wisbech Hockey Club will look to seal an historic season this weekend as they bid for more silverware in the national mixed plate finals.

The mixed team take on Preston in the semi-final in Sheffield tomorrow, with the prestigious England Hockey National Mixed Plate final to be played on Sunday.

It is the first time that the club have reached the finals weekend and follows a glorious year, which saw the ladies’ first team claim the league title after an incredible unbeaten season.

Mixed captain Drew Harvey said: “We’re going to do what we’d normally do on any other week. We like being the underdog. If people think we come from a little town called Wisbech then we might just surprise teams.

“The team we have at the moment have been playing together for six or seven years and we are also reaping the rewards of having a brilliant junior policy.

“Wisbech Hockey Club suffer agonising mixed plate final defeat”

Wisbech Hockey Club suffered national mixed plate final heartbreak against Bedford on Sunday.

Goals from Brad Apted, player of the weekend Natalie Ward and Dan Martell helped the brave mixed team beat Preston 3-2 in Saturday’s England Hockey National Mixed Plate Semi-Final.

However, Wisbech’s historical bid for the coveted trophy fell agonisingly short with a 3-1 defeat. Apted score his side’s goal in the final.

Mixed captain Drew Harvey thanked the club’s sponsors and said: “The defeat does not change the excellent and courageous team performances that got us to the final.

“It may not have been our day but it has definitely been Wisbech’s summer.”

Wisbech hosted round 3 of the national mixed tier 2 championship with dominant possession but lacked the final touch to take the lead.

Midway through the first half Lee Punter attacked the D with a solo effort and put Wisbech 1-0 up.

Shortly after Jason Mallett added Wisbech’s second with a reverse under cut to see the ball fly past the keeper’s head. Wisbech’s continued pressure led to their third with a calmly executed goal by Joey Gomm.

They went into half-time with a deserved 3-0 cushion, but the second half was much slower and chances were missed until Danny Haynes smashed the ball in from the top of the D to set up a tie against Harleston Magpies in the last 16 on March 22.
